Spring Feelings

Hello,

It has been warm here for several days.  I notice the longer days light and I am adjusting to daylight savings time.  I went to   Ithaca with Sharon  last Friday to shop for new fabric.    Great fun  and I  only purchased some fabric for my Alexis project and back grounds.   Yesterday I was out for the FAD meeting.

I continue to work on the 100 Day SAQA projects.  I finished #2 on Friday.    I did more exploration of the fancy machine stitches here and added buttons for more embellishment.

Then on Sunday I started the third project made with Angela’s fabrics as my base.

I am doing fancy thread and such embellishments on this one.   I put in an hour a day on this project so I can work on other things  too.

Progress Report: Leaf Litter  This work is 24″ X 18″.    The leaves are ones I dyed in Pat Pauly’s class in the fall.

I  enjoyed working with Angelina and felted cut offs to fill in more on  this work.

Lap 7-26   This work is almost completed.  I only need to finish the binding along the bottom, so I am calling it done for this week.    All the print fabrics are from a bag full of fabrics that my friend Linda passed to me.   I made a person assignment to do several lap quilts with her fabrics as starts.

Lap 8-26   This project also started with Linda’s fabrics.   All the prints are hers.

Tree Series- Night Tree block This block is all but done too.  I know I have a  pearl moon that I want to add to the sky and I know I will do so when I find it again.

Natural Crystals   This is the third work using the crystal blocks.  Each block is a different layout of the fabrics, but all are facing the same direction.    It is ready for quilting, but  I have no idea of what I want to do for that yet.  Ponder time.

New Handwork   I had pulled a lot of pinks and purples for Leaf Litter, so I used them as my start for this work instead of putting them away.

Easter Pins  I went off  on a bit of a tangent on Monday and played with attaching scraps to paper with the machine.  The I cut the project into eggs and added pompoms as tails .  I will pass them out to friends

I hope  you too are enjoying the crazy weather shifts of spring.

Changes

Hello,

This is one of the last trees in our area that still has leaves.   They are a glorious red  and  almost look like they are burning.    It is amazing how quickly the trees have shed their crowns of leaves.     Again we see their strong dark  bones and walk across their  carpets of gold.   I love this time of year.

I had very little quilt action this week.    My only event was a  FAD lunch.  But the other half of my life was full with plays and family events.   I did make a little progress however.

Progress Report: Lap 23/25   I finished this lap quilt this week.     The center section is  hand painted by my dear friend and fellow art teacher Barbara Veral.   She died a year ago.

I enjoyed   tracing  her drawn lines with my machine.     I miss her a great deal and I am glad to have her work in my life.

Lap 24/25  I started my next lap quilt yesterday.   There is always a need at this time of year.

Cells  This project got going at  the Sisterhood  Retreat a few week ago.   I was playing with zig-zag lines and  overlap a bit here.

Transparency and movement were also a part of my thoughts.  I also played a bit with fancy stitches .

Crystal Blocks   I am moving forward on this project.  The original nine blocks are assembled and I made a row as a boarder yesterday.  I think that really helps frame the project.

On the Sands ( formerly Shore Lines)   This highly textured work is moving forward.

Handwork   this piece came to the top of the pile  and I am putting in time on it now.    I started it at Susan’s when I went to stay with her before the pandemic.    Some things just get buried.

Seasonal Changes

Hello,

We are starting to really feel fall here.  Eric  and I went for a walk around Green Lake this week and enjoyed it a great deal.  We also sat out  doors and read one afternoon while the wind blew down lots of leaves and some walnuts too.   There will not be many more days like these, so we are enjoying them.

I had a full week with a FAB meeting and the Social Arts Tea. The tea was to celebrate this organization that has been in existence for 150 years.      We dressed up and wore hats  as well as having a display of antique clothing.   I had a lot of my aunt and grandmother Ruth’s dresses to share.

I showed off my  mothers wedding dress that was part of a quilt I did several years ago.    Mom has a beautiful voice and she was always singing.  I embroider the chois of songs about weddings and marriage around the dress.    The tea included a great speaker, tea cakes and tea.  It was a fine way to kick off our new year.

Progress Report: Lap 21-25  As the colors show I am already inferenced by the cooler season.

Autumn Tide  Pool    I picked this finished work from the framers this week.    She dose a great job of making things look professional.

Diddie Do   This work is done now.  I have stretch it and tacked it to a foam core board.   I have not decided if I want to frame it or not.

Holly Hocks   I am done with all the hollyhock stocks and leaves now.   I will start to design the humming birds this week.

New Handwork   I was playing with my sewing machine and  running it without tread on a soda can to cut out circles for centers for flowers this time.   Now I will start to hand stitch them down .   It was a fun bit of play.

Friday begins the Sisterhoods of the Scissors retreat.    I have put a lot of time into thinking about what I want to do for the five days  and I have a very full bag of fabrics.     I hope to accomplish a lot.

Spring is Here

Hello,

Spring has arrived according to the calendar as well as the longer sun filled days.   I saw more geese migrating north this week as well as these Snowdrops.   The temperature around here is still doing crazy things, but the longer days really helps one’s mood.

I have only had one day at home this week.

I helped take down the Both Ends of the Rainbow show at the Schweinfurth on Monday.    We worked hard and cleared and packed all three west galleries.

The yesterday I help Noel do more  packing of her studio space.  She generously gave me  lots of beads.   I will not need to shop for beads anywhere except my closet for a long time .

I also went to the  zoom meetings for Sisterhood of the Scissors and Pixies this week.   There was also a FAD meeting were I got so great  feedback and suggestions on some of my work.

Progress Report: Judy’s Banquet  This work is 40″w X 55″ t.   I made it all from the silk dress of Judy’s mom.     It was a pleasant  to work with the silk and it did not slide around much when I zig zagged it down.

Lap 6-25  I got busy and this is a new top that is pin basted an ready to quilt.  I took seven lap quilts to the nursing home this week as well.

Stencils- Robins and Black Capped Chickadees

The chickadees are  done with oil sticks .   The robins are  stenciled with acrylic paint.   I did another print day this week and  there are now enough robins for a quilt.

Oxymorons Challenge-  Plastic Silverware.   The fabric is all  stitched down now.   I am ready to add highlights.  I also drilled wholes in the plastic silverware  I want to add on top.

Red Tide    I am finally ready to start a new handwork tide piece.  I will be using some of the red beads beads that Noel gave me in this one.

Pillows    My friend Marilyn gave me the handwoven fabrics for these two pillows last fall.   I finally finished them this week.

My life is full and I have many friends that make it more joyful and rich.

Winter Beauty

Hello,

We are in the middle of a deep freeze, but there is a strange beauty about it all as well.   We   then experienced  a freezing rain and it coated the branches is a glorious  manor.     The cold and snow on top added to it, and then we had a full cold sunny afternoon.

Everything just sparkled.

That was followed  by    glittering crystals falling last night in  the street light  out side my window.      Today the world out doors is out lined in white and the sun is shinning in the cold.   We are enjoying a true winter here this year.

This week I went off to the  Both Ends of the Rainbow opening for seniors with my friend  Liz.     This is her pastel drawing two sleeping dogs.

Marty had a great quilt in this show.    I love how she did so much with only two fabrics.

Sharon had a piece in this show.  This is part of her fallow fields series.

Bev also had a strong piece in this too.

The other end of the Rainbow included lots of fun student work.  I found this cat by a second grader epically fun.

I made it to the Textile Talk this week as well as a FAD meeting and a Pixie zoom.     It had been and active week.

Progress Report: California Burning- the Victorian   I finally completed this work this week.   It is 42.5 “w X 34” t.  I used nylon netting, silk, organza, silk paper and cotton on this applique quilt.    The base is one of my last Judy Robert’s fabrics.

I enjoyed working with this project.  I am only sorry so may lost  their homes.

Cut & Print    This work is  37’w X 44″ t.     I sure seemed to struggle with this project.   It was started in Nov.   Then I took out a lot as it was not rite.   Changing the  size of the opening in the “film” did the trick.      I am happy with the end result.

This scissors quilt is quiet different than the others as it is made with stencils I cut and printed.  At the moment I feel this is the last of the scissors series.   But,  I do like the scissors shape and may return in the future.

Lap 2-25     This lap quilt is made from the leftovers of the two purple sweat shit jackets.     Oh,  I have more purples, but none left of most of these  purple prints.

Lap 3-25   I started a new lap quilt  right away,  in a different color range.   I finished assembling the top this morning.

The Tide’s Out    I just keep adding to this surface.  It is starting to fill up and I like how it is building.

Paper Dolls-the card  characters    As a part of my ” act on it now goal” – when I saw some similar paper dolls made from playing cards this week , I decided to try it.  They  are a fun little fast challenge with lots of possibilities.

Sisterhood Challenge   I finally pulled out the fabric for our group challenge and got going on it this week.   I have mostly laid out the shore line and  I am ready to stitch it down .

Collage/ Drawing  In looking at this collage/drawing now I think there is not enough color contrast to make this a successful piece.   It many need some additional work.

I hope everyone is staying warm and  creating a little.

Winter Moon

 Hello,

Happy Valentines Day to everyone.      The Moon was full last night- a snow moon – and we have had lot of that this week and last.  There are three more storms headed across the country that are set to hit us as well.     I guess we are making up for the mind winters of the past few years.

Last Friday the gals in the Trifurcation show meant at La Moyne with a young student and did a TV interview about the show.     He told us he selected us for his interview because he wanted to learn more about fiber arts.   I am glad we tickled his curiosity.

FLFA meant on Saturday   and we added Jean to our membership.  This is her leopardess.

Pat had a new jacket that she had made for her next fashion show.

Noel who told us she will be moving to Oklahoma, shared her newest hand work.

Maureen  is doing more Shiori for  her next hand work project.  This will be her starting point.

Anne is getting ready for a two man show and these are two of her new works based on her  Yellowstone trip.

Joan did a seirs of six studies in line.  They are all fun and interesting.   She selected tis one for me to shoot.

Linda is doing thread painting.  She taught a workshop in Colorado and now she is  hassling  to completed this for a class she is taking.

Bev is delighted to finally be back in her studio and she is working on this powerful muted piece by hand.   She is using all her own hand dyed fabrics here.

I also had  FAD meeting this week.   Judy shared one of her works with us.

The Pixies meant this week as usual too.

Progress Report:   Purple Jacket #2  I am happy to sha this project dose in deed fit as apposed to the first that I had to give to Judy because it was too small for me.  I also added pockets on the inside yesterday.  I will say it is warm.

California Burning- the Victorian  I can see the end of this project.  All the quilting is done and I am working on the sleeves and labels now.

The Tide’s Out   This  is a shot of the top edge of this piece.  I have been working on it most of this week and hope to finish this section today or tomorrow.

Cut & Print   I am out line quilting the scissors now on this project.  I have 22 pairs to go at this point.     I will be working out additional  quilting as I go forward.

Handwork  I am working away on this project when time allows.   I have had so much other handwork it has been pushed to the bottom this week.

Felt Owls   I   am going to do  bit of felting now.  These four bodies will become small owls I hope.

Lap 2-25    I decided to use all the leftover fabric from the purple jackets to make a lap quilt.  Here is day ones work.

Enjoy the holiday and keep your fingers in the creative pot

Moving Forward

Hello,

This is the time of year when it seems like I am just inching forward.  I keep being pulled in so many directions,    I’ll just load the dishwasher, and then go to the studio.  Or I open a drawer and decide it needs to be cleaned out, and then I’ll go to the studio.   So when I get to the studio I see  I need to put away the remainders from the last project and I need to write that Thank you note…   on and on it goes and the day it done and I have not done any real studio work.  I will admit that I did a trunk show for The Thumbstall Quilt Guild on Tuesday night and that did take a lot of prep time.   I related quilting like learning how to read.  You learn the letters( how to cut the shapes) then how to make words( making blocks).   The next step is reading books( like putting the quilt together).   Hopefully the Librarian shows one that there are   many different categories of books:  Like mysteries, romances, plays,  comedies,  poetry and nature text to mention a few.  I related the different types of books to  the many different techniques one can use to create  quilts.      I think they enjoyed the narrative as well as the work.     I still need to put the quilts away in there proper groupings so I can find them the next time I am called upon to do a quilt talk.    I also went to the Associated  Artists Group this week and made it to both FAD and Pixies.   In between that the battery in my car died so when I feel like I have done little or nothing this week, I need to remind myself that there were lots of distortions along with the laundry, shoveling  and …

One other little note, the purple  sweatshirt jacket that was too small for me fit Judy perfectly, so I set it home with her.

Progress Report: Scarp Happy I got this piece all put together this week.      The machine step of the binding is in process now too.   I’m working on the hand step of that process. Then  I will need to do additional quilting to complete the job.

Tide Pool   I attached the punch needle work and I am in the middle of adding the yarn  puffs now.   Still lots to do here, but I am enjoying the process.

Lap quilt  I started this new lap quilt this week.   When I look at this  I realized  the California fires are effecting me  subconsciously

New fire   I did indeed start a new fire piece  with one of my last pieces of Judy Roberts fabrics for my base.     It is basted now and I will start the fabric collage work on top this week.

Collage/Drawing        In my on line class, Cass challenged us to mix drawing with our collage work.   I can see it is a lot more challenging than I expected .  In my own analogous, I think I need to keep the collage a bit simpler.   But making mistakes is a part of the learning process.

Keep Moving

New Year 2025

Hello and Happy New year- 2025

I can’t believe we are starting the  second quarter of the 21 century. Time has a powerful way of constantly moving forward even if we are not paying attention.    Our worry about all the computers crashing  when Y2K hit seems so silly now.  I’m showing my age.  So many demands on all of us I guess.    I spent my morning closing my books on 2024 and setting up the book keeping for this year.  Doing that always make me take stock.

It has been a somewhat quiet week for me with  FAB  the Pixie meeting  and me stating a new class.    Making Connections with Cas Holms  is my new challenge for  this year.    I am looking forward to her approach to exploring what is close at hand.

Progress Report:    My Year   I did finish   the quilting and stitching down the binding this week.  Now to get the sleeve added and labeled.

Collage     I did my usual two works this week.

I am trying to do more drawing a a part of the process .

Scrap Happy    I am doing the binding on this queen sized quilt now.  Each side takes more than an hour so the process is slow.

Purple Jacket     In the  newest issue of Quilting Arts Magazine, there was a article about a using a sweatshirt for the base of a jacket.   So I thought I would try it.       This is my back.

Autumn Tide Pool       I am making progress on this project.   I sure seem to enjoy adding all the little buttons and beads to the surface.

Stay safe.

Carol

Busy Season

  Hello

The season is full of action for me.   After seeing the Lion King last Thru evening I went to see Cinderella  on Saturday.   I really enjoyed the giant puppets of Lion King.   Perhaps my fascination  come from all the years I spent making costumes for the school plays.     I so enjoy live theater.      Sunday was the final trunk show at the Schweinfurth.

Pat Pauly was the presenter.     Her quilts are so full of action and rich in color that I always enjoy them very much.   She prints her own fabric, that makes her work so distinct I think.

It was also my last trip to the Quilts= Art= Quilts show this year.      I really have enjoyed the  presentations and  get inspired every time.

There was so much variety this time.      Liz even agreed with me that one seemed to see something new every time.     I learned that I will also be privileged to help with the take down of this show in a few weeks.   So I get one more preciouses look.

FAB meant this week and we had a good talk. I also made it to the Pixie meeting and did the Textile Talk.   My other event was to take  Coral Bleaching to the framer.

Progress Report: Cut the Cord

I finished all the quilting  this week and yesterday I moved the pieces to this top.  I hope to applique them down later today.

Lexi Project   The top is assembled  with the exception of the boarder.  I want to make this one reversible so that will me the next step.   This is a lap/throw  project.

Collage   The Pixies have moved on to doing more of their own thing- but I want to keep playing with collage.     This one is called  Search.

The second one is called    Eyes.   I love this quote ” The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new  landscapes but in having new eyes.” Marcel Proust.

Autumn  Cut Aways    I am  to the quilting of the background now and think I will finish this   project soon.

Steam Punk Dolls   I put is a far amount of time in on these gals this week.  They are starting to look like I imagined.

Autumn Tide Pool   This piece got  a lot of  polished quarts chips added on  this week.   I am adding lots of seed stitches too.

Enjoy the wonders of the season

Carol

First Snow

Hello

We got our first big snow this week.     There have had several additions sense that time too.    Beautiful Winter is really here.

I have had a busy tine sense the last time I wrote.     There was a FLFA meeting at the Schweinfurth on the 30 of Nov.

This quilt won the FLFA prize at the Q=A=Q show.

The meeting went well as they usually do with lots of folks in attendance.

Pat Pauly Shared her new work.

Sharon Souva showed off the quilt she did for her grandson.  She told us  that she included the  blue jean pockets in the construction so she could tuck in some surprise cash it them for him too.

Anne had finally completed her commission.   This will be her last she says.

Susan had finished her crow piece for the class this summer.

Linda brought her machine drawing Elephant for us to view.     It is all built from thread!

Then on Dec 1 Jean had a trunk show.  It was a great one too.     She specializes in fabric collage for her work.

Sharon    Had her trunk show on Sunday last week.   She has completed her Heron piece  in record time.

FAB and the Pixies also meant this week.     Throw in  trips to the Dr and a play and the time has been hectically fast paced.

Progress Report:   Autumn Cuts      All the fabric pieces are attached now.  But I think it needs a bit more so I will spend time studying it this week.

Cut the Cord      I am to the quilting stage for this project now.    I plan to applique the scissors on top.     I am doing reflective quilting with a pointed jog added.   I like the look- but is sure is slow.

Coral Bleaching   I am done with the stitch work on this project and it is off to the framers now.   Lots of stuff I have not used before here.  Like the cut silk cocoons and some real coral that my Mom had collected on the beach in 1966.

New Tide Pool    So I have started a  new sea work.  I painted and melted some Tyvek and  and free motion stitched it down as well as some dyed lace.   Now I will start the embellishing.

Lexi’s top   Alexis asked at Thanksgiving for a new throw quilt in pink so I am busy putting on together for her.

Collages  I missed the pixie meeting last week do to a Dr appointment so I did not know the color choice  and as it turns out they have morphed the project any way.

I  still followed my own rule of using some paper I had  Gelli printed.      This time I used some of the pens that one of the other gals in the group gifted me too.

Several years ago I perched a book full of old images that were suppose to be used in collage and I added them to these works.

Steam Punk Dolls   I was working to clear out a shelf that was full of old magazines.  I had to flip through them all as I did so and came across the idea of doing Stem Punk dolls.   This my start.

6X6   The call for the Rochester  6X6  show is a long way off,  but when I came across these squares I had to act.   That and finding a collection of old jewelry made for some fun for me.

I hope the approaching holidays are not stressing anyone out.   I do love the excitement even though it can be hectic.   Be sure to save some me time for yourself.

Carol
