Hello,

I can’t quite believe we are at the end of this month.  The time seems to be flying by.    Fall mushrooms are appearing in yard now.  I so enjoy coming across these little treasures.  This one, although not colorful as the many orange yellow ones or the white puff balls I see scattered across my lawn, I find specially dear.   Perhaps that is because of the splits that are signs of ageing and growth or because of the scale changes in color.  I am not sure, but I am enchanted.   It’s like a faded flower in some way too.

This week was busy with a FAD  and Pixie meetings.   Judy is busy working away on small quilts to use up her fabric stash.

 

 

 

 

I also made progress on my work for the Joyous Embroidery class.    Fleur Woods gave us lots of ways to add texture to our work this week.     Making Pompons was one of them.  I tried doing it with out the tool first and that is were the big ones came from.  Then yesterday I got the tool at Michaels  and those pompons are much better.     she also suggested that we do some free crochet  to make little mounds or tuffs.   I think I need to keep playing with that idea.   She is inspiring me a lot however.

Progress Report: Imagine    This quilt is 32″ w X 53″ t.      It is the last of the split compliment pieces.  I have some other ideas of projects using the many yards of solids that Liz gave me, but not with color study being the emphasis.   I have learned a lot about color doing these exercises.  And I have learned a bit about quilting too.

 

 

 

 

Ethel Scrap project   I just keep working away on these bits and pieces building more and more 5″ squares.

 

 

Basket    I joined the SAQA Strolling along challenge again and so I am putting in an hour every other day on this project.  It takes me about 40 min for every trip around the out side at this point.  I am on row three of the build up of the sides.

 

 

 

Lap #15  I alternating  the  work  on  the  basket  with  work  on  a lap  quilt.  This  one  is  extra  long   because  I  making it for my cosine  Mike who is over  6 ft tall.     It is pin basted now and I will start to quilt it later today.

 

 

 

Lap # 17    Seeing that I will soon finish # 15, I pulled these fabrics for the next one this week.

 

 

 

Blue Sea- Felt  I made seahorses I made last week were too dark for this work so I made new ones.    They are still dark, but they do work  on the surface  of the project.

 

I will add eyes and stretch it and move on I hope.    There is another work down the road using the seahorses that did not work for this project too.

 

 

 

Drawing.    I did not do a collage this week , but I did draw these dragon flies and frog instead.

Quiet Time Continues

Hello,

I continue to find I have wonderful stretches of time to finish up the nesting I seem to find myself in at this point.  I spent three mornings this week pulling all the fabric off the shelves in my 12 foot closet and refolding and arranging them by color.   The closet is only four feet wide so I can’t show you  all, but I feel really good about getting that done.  I have lots more clear space on the  surfaces in the room now and I can find what I am looking for too.  Of course I uncovered  special stuff I wanted to work with and finish up.  So I have lots on new inspiration to move on.

 I did do the Textile Talk from SAQA this week and meant with the Pixies too.  I did a Praying Mantis for my  collage insect this week.

 

 

 

 

I also spent a day with my friend Marty, and two other gals came to visit as well.   Sharon borough along her newest piece.     I really like the feeling of depth she creates.

 

 

 

 

 Progress Report: Imagine  I finally decided on a title for this split complanate  piece.    And I have moved on to the quilting stage.

 

Scrap   I spent time making blocks of some of the squares I cut last week.   The progress is slow as I only work for an hour every time I work at it, but I find that system works for me.

Felt- Blue Sea    The sea weed got stitched down and the big fish got eyes  this  week.

 

 

 

 

  I made brain coral for this project this week.   The process is slow  but I like the effect.  I learned it years ago and it is from a process used on some hats in the past.  I will add a tutorial on the process.

I also tried to make some sea horses for this project using the roving and stitching process from my QBL class.    I like the results,  but the color does not work for me and they are all swimming in the wrong direction for this work.    So I have raw material for the next one.   I also did a star fish for the Joyous Embroidery class  and it will be a part of the new piece too.   The background is one of the fabrics that I painted for the  Embroidery class.

Basket   While I was doing all the sorting and such of the fabrics I found this silk kimono yarn and decided to make a basket to hold some of the raw materials for various projects.  I started yesterday and I like how it is going.   This is only  about half the base.

 

 New Lap  With the sorting I found lots of fabrics that I want to use as jumping off places for new lap quilts.   This is the stuff for the next one.

Moving Along

Hello,

Fall seems to be a time of lots of action. I continue to be in my clean the nest mode and I finally got to the fabric stash this week.    I sure have a lot of raw material.   I have been putting in and hour  plus  every day  this week and I am a long way from done.   It is good to put all the like stuff together and I am sure I will be glad when the job is done.  It is just that progress is slow at this point.    The desk is totally covered, so there is not turning back until the job is done.

      I helped hang the Associated Artists Show on Saturday .    My good buddy  Barbara won Best of Show this year for this dramatic piece of pastel work.

Carol  A was also a part of this show  with a new metal piece.

 

 

 

One of the newer members,  is doing this wonderful high relief fabric sculpture too.   She told me there is no thread work involved   just ticking the self designed  and printed fabric into a sold backing.     I need to consider this process a bit.

 

 

 

I entered Wildfire in Whisky Hallow for this show.   Liz add two great little drawings, but my shot of them is blurry.

 

 

 

 

FAB meant this week as did the Pixies.  I did a Mud Dobber for my insect this time.

 

 

 

I did the Joyful Embroidery class this week too.  We painted fabric for a color base as the assignment this week.

 

 

 

 

Progress Report  Scrap assembly   I will add another strip to all the little parts later today and cut more squares from them tomorrow.  It is just at the building stage now.

Split Compliment Green  I am building away on this project.  It  is proving to be a challenge and although the progress is slow, I do enjoy it.

 

 

 

 

Handwork   I worked away on this project through the many zoom meetings I had this week as well as at the FAD meeting.  I  seem to need to keep my hands busy.

I hope everyone is enjoying cooler weather as fall builds strength.

Beginning Fall

  Hello,

The moon was full last week and already it is waning to less then half- the time is flying.     Because I spent 32 years of my life teaching School and  fifteen years before that attending school, I always see Labor Day as the start of fall and new beginnings.    My life is full of everchanging patters as are most folks.

It has been a busy week for me starting with the opening of the Members’ show at the Schweinfurth last Friday evening.  It was glorious and full of the work of many friends.

The Quilt Divas were well represented with this work by Thresa  as a starter.

 

 

 

 

 

Mary presented one of her African pieces.

 

 

 

 

My old fellow art teacher, Carol, entered one of her metal sculptures.   I love the shadows here too.

 

 

 

 

 

Victoria  showed a wonderful new conglomerate sculptures .  She always dose such delicate work.

 

 

 

 

Liz was proud of her quilt too and was asked to explain  her process by  a passing visitor.

 

 

 

 

 

There was also a Diva meeting this week were Barb shared her hand dyed pieces from QBL.

 

 

 

Alice showed off her newest quilt too.

 

 

 

 

 

  I am at week three of  the Joyful Embroidery  Class.  We were introduced to the teachers favorite stitches this week.  Because I like to work big  I did two  a samplers along with the class.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The pixies also got together on Zoom this week.  They all survived the hurricane with mostly downed frons and small branches.  The storm  came a shore  north of them.   This is my newest collage with a Katydid as my insect.   We seem to be staying with the insect thee for a while longer.

Progress Report: Earth Works    I think I am done with this work, but I can’t decide what way is up so I can’t add a sleeve.   I did tap Sharon’s  brain as to how to get a good frayed edge on the piece, but I had already done the quilting so I could not use her method.  But it is good to know there is more than one way to do it.

The blue lines on top are adapted from the tangle of power cords on the floor of my class room at QBL.

 

 

  Ethel Scrap  I came across the box full of scraps that Ethel had started.  I think most of the strips she originally cut have be incorporated by now and I am working with mostly my own narrow units, but I have decided  to push forward and complete several more bed quilts with her stuff.    These are the  Mini squares  that I completed this week.

Felted project   I started working on the top layer of this project this week.  First I made some thread painted/roving fish in the method we explored in Amanda’s class at QBL.   ( the little blue ones at the bottom)  After cutting them out, I cut some bigger ones from some of the metallic fabric that Noel gave me.    I am so lucky to have such generous friends. Then I made the sea weed  from some metallic yarn in the stash.    It is ready for some stitch down and additions I think.

New Split Compliment    Marty kindly gave me the beautiful red yellow fabric I was looking for to start this last of the Split Compliment projects.   I though I would try some additional shapes with it too.  In the past I have used the precut curves as my start, but there were none of them among the colors I am using this time.

 

Linen Shirt     I am still working away on adding handwork to this shirt.  It  got lost and the time to wear it is almost over.   So I am pushing forward on the area around the neck.

 

Handwork   I listed to the SAQA lecture on Wed and worked on finishing up this bit of hand work at that time.

 

 

 

As the days grow shorter and the weather cools I am sure I will put in more time on my art.

Summer Time

 Hello,

 

It is full summer time here.    I enjoyed Fireworks along with my friends  and was out doors a lot this week.   I went to the Towpath quilt show on Sat and  enjoyed the work of many hands.

 

I got to see Noel’s  pieces for the group challenge.  Participants got a line from The Night Before Christmas” to illustrate.     I think she did a great job.

 

 

 

 

  There was lots of wonderful work.  I was fascinated by this quilt where  the artists had added ink tense color to her embordered work.   It was a great show and there were lots of good pieces.

 

 

 

I also had a pixie meeting this week.  We are challenging  ourselves to use letter or text in our work this month.   I did join the SAQA Strolling Along  45 day Challenge on July 1 too.  I am using Prepared as my first emphasis.

Progress Report: Prepared   This is the 5th in the Split Compliment series.   It is all assembled and ready for quilting at this point.

 

 

 

Collage    I did my collage work this week as usual.   This is were I did my Letters for the Pixie challenge with this orange work.

 

 

 

 

 

 

I did add some drawing with this second collage.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Blue Beach   I have decided that this work is complete now.  I only need to add a sleeve and labels  and it is done.

 

 

 

 

 

Scrap Happy    Our nationhood is having a Art and Garden show in early Augusts and I told them a few month ago I would donate a quilt for them to raffle off.  I had forgotten about that commitment until I saw the advertisement.   it has taken a bit of a effort, but the blocks got assembled and put into rows this week.  I will make a back and put the work together this week as I want to have it done before QBL on the 16 of July.

New Work  Sense I can see the end of a the Prepared work, I pulled some more of the printed fabric from the SAQA 100 day challenge pile and that was the starting point for the colors  for this project.

Still Recovering

   Hello,

 

I  am still a little under the weather although now it seems only to be a head cold.  I am just glad not to feel the all over body Ake.     I had a good week however.   I went off to the Schweinfurth Spring Retreat and go to see my old friends and got some work done too.

Susan was there working on a stitched paper pieces.   Making them “float” together with stitches between took a lot of pashents.

 

 

 

 

Victoria worked away on her high relief pieces.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sharon did a nice bit of building on her newest felted piece.   it is based on a photo of the reflections in her bathroom mirror.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Donna spent the weekend building pillow cases for the QBL teachers.

 

 

 

 

 Ellen worked away on several pieces based on some of her classes this year.

 

 

 

Linda made three lap quilts from a bigger quilt that was a family piece.

 

 

I worked away on  my hands project and got it all  arranged.  The pieces got united and the over lays got pinned on before the week end was over.

There were several other folks too all of us happily doing our own thing.

 Meanwhile down stairs the Made in New York show was going on.  My friend Joyce Holman  had a great piece in this show.

 

 

 

 

Pat Pauly was in the show and  her work looked great.

 

 

 

 

Then there was Julia’s piece and it won best of show.

My only other event this week was the Pixies and we talked as usual.

 

 

 

 

Progress Report: Circulation    I did  quilt on this project at the retreat as I needed a bit of a break from the hands project.    It is 36″ w X 44″ l  and the second piece in the split compliments series.   I used a lot of the precut pieces from Liz in this piece and had a good time with it.

 

 

 

 

 

Circus Grounds    This work is 40″w X 50″ l.   I seemed to have let the materials get a way from me here.    It it the last of the 100 day project pieces that I started during the 100 days.  I still have prints to use and will start another soon.  I did lots of machine quilting here and again enjoyed the process.

 

 

 

 

Take Off  I finally got back to this piece this week.   I drew the birds in inktense  pencils and now I am machine appliqueing them down.   It takes me about 20 min to do each bird.

New Split    I  pulled these fabrics for the next one in this series.   Yellow is the main color.    It too has some of Liz’s curved scraps that I will try to incorporate.

 

 Creative Assistants   I did give away a batch of these little guys at the retreat this week.  But I made more than I passed out so I am  making progress.

I hope the wonders of spring are around everyone and that they are all healthy.

Hello,

This week was a busy one as they all seem to be.  I went off to Bever Lake with my friend Sharon to the Wool Festival and had a good time.  I did purchase a few oz. of purple and pale blue roving for my next felting project.    The trees were still bare, but the temperature was wonderful so we took the woodland trail and enjoyed the reflections in the pools and all the wonderful textures we saw.    The Sisterhood of the Scissors had a Zoom meeting as did the Pixies.  I always like to catch up with my fellow fiber artists.  I also listened to the SAQA talk this week so my stimulation has been high.

Progress Report: Circus Parade   This is part of the SAQA 100 day challenge.  It is 35.5″ w X 39″ t.      We are on day 96 of the challenge so I only hope to nearly complete one more piece before the challenge is over.  I used all the animals that I printed for his project.

 

 

 

 

 

Circus Grounds   This is the last one of the SAQA Challenges that I will finish in the 100 days.   I may or may not keep going with the printed images as my starting place for some new work- that remains to be seen.     I am also using lots of the precut curved pieces that Liz gave me in this project.   Doing that adds another bit of a challenge to the process.

 

Analyze-  Split Compliment 1   This a self challenge continuing with the color play stuff.  Again I must thank Liz for the most of the fabrics here.   I am quilting following all the skinny  insert lines for this work.      I am using a metallic blue thread for this one  sense blue is the  Primary color.

Fractured -Split Compliment 2   I have just pulled the fabrics for this project.  The primary color is Red with Yellow Green and Blue Green as the t

 

Creative Assistants   I have been working away on these little guys.  I am having fun cleaning out containers of addons as I go.

 

Take Off   I added one additional curvy cut insert into this base this week and pin basted it .   Now I can begin the birds.

 

 

 

Scrap Happy   I have been working away at this project for a while and I am now to the stage were I have lots  of strips to connect to one another .  These long strips become the edges of the 4.5″ centers for my Romans Strip blocks that I use to create Scrap Happy Quilts.

Warmer Weather

Hello,

We are really feeling the warmer temperatures here in the north east.  I even left the window open all night last night.  Very refreshing.   It has been a fast change as last weekend  I did not remove the electric blanket when I change the sheets because I had needed it the night before.  I sure have not needed it for the last three nights.  The buds are popping out on the trees and there are lots of small  tender green leaves on things as we walk.  The birds of all sorts serenade us  as well.  It is a glorious time of year.

I have been busy with lots of meetings.   The Pixies meant on Wed. and   the FAD group meant here this week too.  We spent the whole time out on the patio  enjoying that wonderful temperatures.  Sharon shared two of her newest winder field pieces with us.    Yesterday I went off to Marty’s new digs and spent the day with her.   She  is playing with fabric to make landscapes.  I think they are wonderful.

 

I am ready to begin a new piece for the SAQA 100 day challenge.   We are on day 90 already.  I sure have enjoyed doing the work.

 

 

 

Progress Report:  Titers in the Ring   This work is 40″ w X 50″ t.   It is #6 in the SAQA 100 Day Challenge pieces.   The tigers are the stamp and I also hand dyed the green lace that I used here.

 

 

 

 

 

Blue Beach  I am enjoying adding the buttons to this work.  I think I am beyond the half way point now.

 

 

 

 

 

Circus Parade  This work is also part of the SAQA 100 Day challenge.   I used all the Chinese Zodiac creatures that I made in this one.  I started free motion quilting  on this this morning.    This is quilt # 7 in this series.

 New Series- Split Complements #1 Blue- Yellow Orange- Red Orange   Titled:  Analyzed Appearance        I felt I needed to keep up the color exploration so I moved on to Split Complements.  I think I will do one primary and the two variations on its complement for this series.  I started with Blue and used four shades of  that base  color with this piece plus white for contrast.

Nebula   I did this felted piece as a response to the demonstration at the  Associated Artist meeting two weeks ago.  The demonstrator was going to toss the colorful material she had peeled away from the surface of her work.  I picked it up and felted it into this piece.  I finished the beading yesterday.  Only need to frame it now.

Take Off    I have put so much of my time into abstract work of late that I thought I would start a piece with subject matter.  So I built this curvy cut background.  I plan to add sea guls taking off on top.
