Travels in Florida

Hello,

I got home form sunny Florida on Sunday and arrived in a snow storm. The trip was beautiful and exciting. I spent five days with Chris T in Brenton Florida. She is a great hostess and took me to see the Museum of Whimsy. It was a visual overload with so much to look at that I felt a bit overwhelmed. The flying pig is from that museum and a very small portion of what the museum has to offer. Then it was off to the Ringling museum with a different feel altogether. It is divided into three separate museums. The actual circus stuff and the art collection is where we spent most of our time. The dioramas where full of amazing detail, like this one of the big top. I had not considered all the parts that went into running a Circus including, black smiths, adverting men and costume repair folks along with cooks and performers. It was a delight. Chris’s son took us out on his boat into the Gulf to see the sun set one night. it was glorious. Chris took me to the Museum of Southern Florida where I watched a great talk/demonstration on Manatees among many other things. This fellow is set for release back into the wild soon.

I enjoyed the Village of the Arts where her shop is located. It was fun to explore and see wonderful art at every turn. Ihelped in Chris’s gallery two days too.

. We walked the Mangrove grove shore on Sunday morning. There were lots of interesting plant forms there. Chris’s home is on the water and we got to see lots of close up of wonderful shore birds, every morning and evening .

Then we went off to Gulfport and I moved in with Cris W. Susan, Cris and I spent a day at Fort Desoto on the beach and had a good time relaxing, drawing and watching the passing birds. I did collect shells too.

Cris took time to teach Susan, Carolyn, Laura and myself how to do Boiled Books. I was apically happy with how mine came out. This shots shows the plants that created the white on this page.

Susan and I painted fabric and work on projects in her garden several days. We went to exercise class, drawing on Wednesday eve and did the Gulfport editable garden tour. I learned a lot on with that experience.

I even got up twice to see the sun rise over the water. I had a wonderful time. I feel so fortunate to have such nice folks to visit.

This week was the first on the month and there was a QuEG’s meeting on Tues. Angela has been making books. Thirteen last month! This is one of her Secret Belgium binding ones. Corrine shared her Coptic stitch binding books too. I think we are headed for a book play day in the future.

Susan was busy getting ready for The Surface Design Conference with a series of small color based quilts. This one is Green. She also had red, yellow and blue ones in similar fashion. Great fun with letter forms and color I think. Sally made a table runner for the holiday this month.

Liz shared her new mystery block project with us. Lots of color here. She also had her 6X6 entries for the Rochester Art Center ready to ship.

There was also a Diva meeting on Tuesday evening. This is Anne’s work on machine drawing and quilting. I really like the quiet dignity of this work.

Mary shared her women project. They are all to be stretched and will all have portions that hang off the side. There were ten of them. That is a lot of work.

Regina presented her gorgeous snow dyed work! She really can get great colors! Noel brought a crazy quilt she is working on and this rework of one of her older pieces. They are very impressive groups and I find them stimulating.

Progress Report:Icarus I think I’m just about ready to launch into the figure for this work . I keep fiddling with the position of the body parts but feel now I can at least begin the wings this week. That way I can still play with the body if I want.

Collections VI I keep collection and adding things to the surface of this piece. I have lots of stuff of Moms I can use here. No stitching yet, but that will begin soon.

Jacket I have been frozen with this piece for a while so I took it to the meetings on Tue and got some advice. I now have a few ideas on how to go forward. That is one of the best parts of belonging to groups of fellow artists.

3 X 3 A-1 I finished this block while I was in Florida. I will work into it more when it is joined with its sisters and I can see what needs to be built up.

A-2 I moved into this one when I finished the work on A-1. This is my last block and I will soon move into the next phase.

Sea Stars

This work grew out of leftovers from Wave and the SDQA starfish block I did for their auction. I find that my mind sometimes just keep asking “What If?” and away I go on the next project.

The Card project has changed. It grew out of the Florida connection. We meant and decided to change the focus to Childhood Memories. I realized I could not do collage to fulfill this project so I am changing my approach too. I plan to work larger and to do painted fabric and machine drawing to solve the problems presented. Over the core of time it should help my machine drawing skills too.

March Begins

Hello,

As the photo shows we are still having winter here. The first day of March it did snow and it is alternating between sun shine and snow fall around here now. The deep blue shadows that the sun creates on the white surface never seem to lose there wonder for me.

Along with a new month there are meetings. The Finger Lakes Fiber Artists meant on Sat. This is a shot of Marcia’s quilt. We had a good meeting with lots of decisions about our future. Liz has now finished quilting her school days quilt. Angela is taking a class on line dealing with felting. She has learned how to mix the fibers and now she can create any color she wishes. Beverly shared this beauty that is full of her hand dyed fabrics. Marla shared her rug hooking project.

Pat finished this new big piece. This work is the newest piece in her series using only two fabrics that she has created. I think it is very powerful. Mary shared a work she started in a workshop on silk work. She altered it to fit what she wanted to express. QuEG’s meant on Tues. There were only three of us but we still found a lot to share. This is a shot of Corrine’s newest book cover. She also shared this beautiful scarf that is felted work on a sorry base. She had a whole collection she had purchased as gifts. The idea is worth some exploration. Angela had her Sax keys piece that she hand quilted. It is a whole cloth quilt that she created in a class at QBL two summers ago.

This is a felted and stitched book jacket that Angela did too.

The Diva’s also meant on Tues. Regina showed us this new top that she had created from three prints that she had made in a class at QBL2 . She also shared this work with indigo she has made with a stamp on top. Joan shared some collages that she is building in prep for a new work. It was a good meeting, even though attendance was small at this gathering too.

Progress Report: small god – Zapoteck This little quilt is 23” w X 32” l. It is based on a sculpture that I saw in Oaxaca at the ruins last month. All the parts are appliqued down with a wide satin stitch. I may created some more work from my photos. of other sculptures.

Shore Line This work is coming along nicely. I must have it done before the 20th of March so there is a little pressure.

Wave This is a good example of how one can see in a photo problems one can not realize when looking at the subject under natural conditions. The picture clearly shows that there is not enough contrast between the words and the background. I could not quite see that in reality. So I have pulled out new pieces for the background and I will redo it. Finding something new to apply to the quilted background however may prove to be more of a challenge.

Creative Assistants I finished up 15 more of these little guys for this summer.

Snow Dye The snow dyeing resulted in these beautiful fabrics.

Starfish I keep doing the knots on the star fish. I think this one is ready to face and apply to the background.

3 X 3 C-2 This square is mostly complete now. This bit of Daily Practice is going very well.

3 X 3 C-1 This square is about half done at this point. The process is very calming for me.

Label Cards: Bird Song Despite the snow, I have heard lots of bird songs when I have been out of doors of late. It is encouraging.

Stretching I like to stretch my mind and keep it limber. And I would disagree with this statement for the most part. But I have been know to take on more than I really should by stretching the idea too much.

Winter white

Hello,

We are in the middle of a beautiful snow storm here. I shot this image through one of the garage windows. I love the ice crystal patterns and how they break up the view.

There was a Flinger Lakes Fiber Artist meeting this week. This work by Pat was one of the wonderful works we looked at and talked about.Pricilla brought all these silk squares that she intends to use in a new jacket.

Liz shared this work that she machine quilted her self. She and I dyed printed the fabric in one of our grange dates last summer.

Lori showed us this work of hers that was in the members show at the Schweinfurth. The gold and black fabric background was a piece of fabric that she purchased from Pat last summer.

Noel took Pat’s Two by Two class and this is the result of that. I like how Noel uses diagonals in her work.

I find this work by Regina just fascinating. I just keep looking and seeing new areas of interest with each study.

Joyce is working on book forms now and this is just one that she shared.

Marcia is playing with movement in her work at the moment. I think it is just great how much variety is going on in this group of talented women and I am so happy to be a small part of it.

The QuEG’s also meant this week. Liz showed off another of her works. She is in the process of quilting this piece too.

Sue Ellen spent a little time playing this season and created this table runner. Lots of bright color here.

Progress Report: Collection V I keep working away on this project and I think I am nearing the end of itI am doing the line stitching now, usually a sign of the completion of the task.

Forest Flock I worked on the second set of birds this week and they are a little beyond half way done. They need about three more shades of thread in blues and grays to be complete I think.

3X3 I have now laid out all the panels for this project. I want to add some circles in transparent fabrics on top and then I will be ready to begin hand stitching on them.

Jacket I keep stitching away on this project but it is slow as it is the bottom of the stack and there is no time line for it.

There are no cards this week because I can not find the ones I did. There were curling as they dried so I put them under something and cannot find them. They will turn up and then be a bonus.

This is also the last entry for a few weeks as I am off to Oaxaca Mexico to visit with Susan. The next post will be full of news of that trip I am sure.

Quiet Days

Hello,

We are in a quiet winter week at the moment. Snow and Christmas prep keep one in the house and busy. I had several days at home working and I enjoyed them a lot. Sat afternoon was the opening of the 12X 12 show at the Broad Street Gallery in Hamilton.

Sharon and I went out together and we had a good time. Several pieces were sold but not our work.

This piece is in the show along with two more bird pieces. I was told by one of my Social art friends that she really liked this one.

Progress Report: Dickcissels This felted work is 12” X 12”. I am having a good time doing little birds. The felting portion is fun too. Then adding all the details on the birds as I build them with the stitching is a real learning process.

Solo Blue Jay This bird work is also 12” X 12”. ( I have backgrounds built for two more) I tried to make the background more interesting by putting him in a tree. The Dickcissels are found only in meadow settings so building trees for this background was especially enjoyable. I have been experimenting with putting two treads through the eye of the needle and that makes for a more complex color mix with the feathers.

Totem Fox The fox its self is all appliqued down now and I am to the quilting stage. I am trying to follow the dye lines and create grass with them.

Jacket The hand work on this jacket continues. I am still feeling the inspirations from the Slow Stitch class I took at the Schweinfurth last month.

Cockle burs- Noogoora’s The bur heads are all stitched down now and I am ready to do the finish work on this piece.

Jean’s Project

This is the early stage of building this box quilt. All the little white tags are the centers of the rows and they are labeled so I don’t accidently put them on the wall upside down when I walk back to the pin wall. I seem to only be able to add one or two patches at a time on this work. Then I must look and decide what to do next.

Waterfall The tree’s crown is attached to the background. I am now ready to begin doing the rocks and water in this piece.

Label Cards -Laughter This is almost a cheat as I did so little in creating this card. But when I saw this quote I could not stop myself from using it.

Line of Sight I enjoy how the eye is lead up and away in this sculpture. Lines are strong directors for our eyes.

Fall Retreat 2018

Hello,

The Schweinfurth Fall Retreat was last week end. I had a good time and got a bit of work done along with lots of old friends. Janice, a friend I made at the fall retreat two years ago, made and appearance and worked on this baby quilts. Her child is due in April. Sally finished up this top. One of her children gave it to her.

Victoria returned to work on this piece that has some hand dyed stuff in it that she created in the wet studio last fall.

Susan made three Christmas stockings( yes, that is an opossum on the one above her head ) and quilted on a piece that she started at QBL two summers ago.

Sally F worked on this wonderful soft colored piece that is a jump off from a Kay Facet design.

Randy quilted with the quilting machine in the front of the class room and made progress on this quilt.

Janet worked on creating these diamonds in Cherry wood strips and she got all the blocks done this weekend.

Liz worked away on this piece using some of her hand dyed fabric.

I started playing with some trapped cut yarns just to see what would happen. Then I also started to assemble a top using the crows I printed at Susan’s in Florida in March. Everyone had fun and made progress. There was so much going on it was rather exciting.

Sisterhood of the Scissors meant at the Schweinfurth today and looked at the the Q=A=Q show. We decided to use this nine patch quilt as the basis for our next challenge. The wild piecing and applique work appealed to us. Not sure about he rules- but I think it will push folks to some unique work.

After checking out the Q=A=Q show the group went upstairs to view the Members Show. This is my piece, Deep Jellies that is in the show.

Lots of my friends are in this one too. There is work by Victoria . I know she dyed this in a workshop with Pat Pauly.

Lori’s piece from Danalia was displayed.

Angela’s felt work was shown too. I regret to say that my shot of The Crows Of Auburn, by Regina , is too fuzzy to post- but it was there as well. NOel had a ceramic piece too. It is a strong show with lots of variety and very enjoyable.

Progress Report: Purple Study I enjoyed building this little 11” X 11” piece. The hand work class is still resonating with me.

JacketAs further proof of that the handwork classes influence, I started altering this linen jacket this week. I took out the shoulder pads and added a few patches of color. I have even done a little hand stitching here as well. I can see this is a long term project.

Black Capped Chickadee I did some tread painting of Chickadees this week as I want to keep building the free motion skills.

Earth – Waterfall I have not touched this piece in awhile but I got back to it this week. I am building in the trees at this point. The water over the rocks will come later.

Scrap Happy I am assembling the rows through the backing and batting in a sew and flip fashion. I will quilt over all of it later to add strength.

Rework FOX I thought I was finished with this work a few weeks ago. When I took it to the QuEGs meeting folks like the colors and the layout- but said it needed more quilting. This is a case where in my rush to finish I did not really look at the work to see it’s flaws. It is easy to repair this one- I merely took off the sleeve and labels and pealed back the facings so I could add more machine quilting. I am building up the new quilting in a diagonal pattern.

Daily Practice The hand work continuers to fill in on this work. I need to finish that step and then live with it a while to see if it needs any additional embellishment. I am trying to allow for the looking stage.

Southern Crows The top I stared at the the retreat is all assembled now. Pressing and basting need to come next so I can begin to quilt it.

Shredded Color This is a close up of the other piece that I started at the retreat. I have plastic bags of shredded yarn in color groups that I capture between the felted background and various colors of nylon net with free motions stitching. It is an experiment and I am leaning lots. I may or may not keep the piece as a whole unit. Got to do the careful looking and living with it – but first I need to finish the work.

Label Card: Beyond In this crazy fast pasted world, it is difficult to look beyond our next step or the next day. I fear we are losing lots of joy and wisdom by not looking a little bit beyond the immediate events. So this card is to remind me to slow down and think about the future as well as the past.

Bounty of Show Work

Hello,

It is fall and the season of quilt shows. I always submit lots of entries and this year I really did well. I have two works in the Associated Artists at the Manlius Public Library. That show opened on the 8th of Sept and will go until the 29th. The reception is Sat. Oct 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Library in Manlius NY. My works Black Capped Chickadee and Birch Trees are a part of that exhibit.

I am also a part of the Interwoven Journeys in Fiber Arts show at the Broad Street Gallery in Hamilton, NY. This show opens on Sat Sept . 15, with the reception from 5 to 7. Indian Pipe is one of the 14 pieces that I submitted to this show.

This is one of the four works that will be in the Quilts Unlimited show in Old Forge at the View from Oct 5 to Nov 5. The first weekend on Sat is the opening with a lunchen and awards. The other three works show are Quartered Glyph, Asters and Calling Crows.

Generational Whispers was the work that is in the judged “It’s All Relative” show by Experience Fiber Arts in the Whiler Building, 1 E. Main St in Rochester NY. The opening is Oct 6, 2:00 to 5:00. This show runs until Oct 26.

I was also accepted in the international Schweinfurth Quilts= Art= Quilts show Judged Show. My Label quilt was the entry for that show. It opens Oct 27 and runs until Jan 6, 2019 . 205 Genesee St. I also will be a part of the Members show at the Schweinfurth during the same time. My piece Deep Jellys will be a part of that show. I am flying high with all this work coming and going and it is requiring a bit of juggling on my part too.

I have also spent a little time with my friend Tanya this week. She is exploring dyeing silk with procion dye. I really like her use of color on this experimental piece.

Progress Report: JIG This quilt is 40″ w X 39″ t. I enjoyed working on this piece. It really was finished last week, but I wanted to fray the edges of the letters so it was in the washer last Thur.

I dyed the orange and red fabric behind these letters. One of my personal challenges for this year was to use my hand dyed in all my works this year and this is it for this piece

FOX

I have cut all the words for this piece and pinned them in place. I am now in the process of stitching the words down before I satin stitch around the out sides. The light green and the rust words use my own hand dyed work.

Forest Fire The base for this piece is a yard of Judy Roberts fabric. I have added Angelina to represent the light in the burning sky. The fur trees are fuzed down and I will build on top to create the feeling of fire burning them.

Scrap Happy I continue to add together strips and bits of fabric from the Ethel box to create squares for the new Scrap Happy quilt.

Daily Process The red orange in the background is some of my hand dyed on the fabric. I am now adding the hand stitching to this work as well.

Collection IV I am working on the hand stitching on this project now. I call it Friends because I am using lots of items that my friends have given me. The flower applique is from Tanya.

Label Cards : Life is Art For all of us the creation of our individual self is an ongoing process. doing it artfully is the big challenge.

Enduring Some images are just universal and speak to all of us. They last the test of time.

All American The Grand Canyon and a native American chief- both are items that are a part of our culture and no other country.

Summer

Hello,

The summer is in full bloom in this area. Lots of flowers and vegetables are available in the farmers market. It is a great time of the year. The weather has been so pleasant that Liz and I enjoyed dyeing yesterday. Now I have three layers of color and pattern on my fabrics. That was my goal for this summer. I only need to do the time consuming wash out now.

I also went on a trip to the Fenimore Museum with a couple of my buddies. The museum has a great Native American collection. I enjoyed it very much . This mask is only one of many beautiful works of indian art.

Progress Report: Mulberry Memories I am moving alone on this project and now I am adding in the landscape and foliage to fill many areas. It is the fun detail stage now.

JIG All the text is raw edge appliqued down now. I am beginning to do the reflective quilting now.

When the quilting is done I am going to run this work through the washer and dryer to get even more fraying of the edges of the words.

Collection 3 I am now to the hand step of the work on this piece . I enjoy adding in little found objects as well to add even more texture.

Wild Fire This is the third in the elements series. I am also distressed by the Wild Fires in the west so this seems like a good way to think about natures power of destruction as well as creation. I am using Angelina to add the sparkle of fire light to this work.

Daily Practice I am nearing the end of the hand work on this piece I think. Adding the embellishment of the metal and beads seems like a good place to stop I think.

Cards: Kindness This is a wonderful concept. I agree that Kindness is underrated.

Comfort There are times when it is necessary to be still and consider our citation. Then are also time to move forward. Most of us do not spend enough time contemplating and just act.

Second Visit

Hello,

I enjoyed the Kimono Exhibit at Munson Williams Proctor so much I went back with Liz and Barb this week. I am so glad I did as I was once again floored by the work. I even saw a whole wall of kimonos that did not register in my consciousness at the end of the exhibit because my mind was so full of work. I saw and paid attention to different details too. It was a good experience. Liz also had to pick up the wood block print that she had purchased so the trip did double duty. This bee print is a second pull that was on display in the museum.

Liz and I also dyed this week. I want to add one more layer of color on the fabric before I start to was it out so there are no images this week.

I have exciting news too. My Label Quilt III was accepted for the Quilts= Art = Quilts show at the Auburn Center for the Arts. I am thrilled.

Progress Report: JIG

I am to the point where I am stitching down the words on this piece.

The work is slow as there are so many sharp changes in direction.

Mulberry Memories I am adding the images on the surface now. This shot shows that the spokes of the bike need to be done in black as the silver does not show up. I also need to add a lot of hand stitching to the work.

Collections 3 I started another one of these little works that use bits and pieces of items in the studio. It too needs lots of hand work now.

Collections 4 Then in my clean up I discovered another collections piece so I will try not to bury it and work away on this one as well. In my future I can see lots of setting on the patio and enjoying the summer in my future while I do handwork.

New Work : Fire I am a bit distressed by the fires in the west so I am going to do a piece with a forest burning. I have pulled out these possible fabrics to think study on while I ponder this subject.

Daily Practice This work gets it attention during the news every night so it is coming along nicely. Cards: Surface I just love texture and this card is a collection of many of them.

Never Too Late to Learn This little fortune is a powerful message for procrastinators I think.

Hello,

We have a house guest, our daughter’s dog Riley. He is a good husky, but requires three walks a day. That sure is eating into my work time. I am enjoying myself .

I discovered this is my 300th post. I never envisioned that I would still be writing and creating this work this far into the future when I started it. The first one was Sept. 1, 2011 and I have come a long way. That first blog only had three pictures. Now I see photos as one of the strongest parts of my posts. I was so tentative about what to write in the beginning. Now I am surprised and proud of this work. I look forward to the postings and think about what I want to cover over the week. It makes me pay more attention to my peers, what I am doing and my environment. I look forward to noting things every week. I do not plan to end any time soon as I just renewed my domain name for the next three years.

Progress Report: Collection 2- Grandmother Mc This work is 18” w X 31” l. I started out with some lace that grandmother Ester had created and built up the surface with more items that where hers and represented her.

She had button tin and I spent many hours stringing them for her. Three different ones from the collection are shown here.

Perception I am done adding the text to the background with metallic threads on this work. Now I am doing reflective quilting around all the words.

Persuasion I am still doing pebble quilting of the words for this quilt. I seem to only be able to quilt three words in an hour. I have seven words remaining.

Rocky Shores I am doing a Quilt University class by Linda Schmidt. The first lesson is on water. I painted the sky and water and them I followed the instructions on how to make the rocks and foam. I am making up my own shore line. It is all pinned in place now and I will begin stitching next.

Mulberry Memories This week I worked on the winter memories for this quilt. Ice skating, and sledding were two of the things we did lots of those years. Gene had a flexible flyer and it was a wonderful sled. We even built snow jumps for it.

Old Barn I just started this work based on a photo of the old barn on Dad’s farm. It fell down before he moved from there and the lumber was burnt in the stove in that house.

Daily Practice I am now adding some lace flowers to the surface of this project. I hand dyed the lace last summer with Liz. This project continues my effort to use materials that I have altered with dye this year.

Card It is hard some times to keep things balanced. I often go to excess on some things. I am trying to pay attention to this as I get older and think about the need to keep my many interests in line.

I just could not seem to stop working on collage this week. Collection, sifting, placing and creating a new image from scraps- it is a wonderful process in my eyes.

Great Weather

Hello,

After several days of spring rains, we are enjoying wonderful weather. I now need to do some yard jobs. But any excuse to be out doors will due. It is so wonderful with pleasant temperatures and almost daily changes in the environment. There was only one meeting this week and it was of the FAB group. I forgot my camera so there are no new images.

Progress Report: Ravens This work is 38”w X 49” l. It really came together with ease. I made a drawing and then added a Raven’s head to the big white areas.

I enjoyed working with the limited palet.

Summer Family- Cardinals Texture is one of my main interests, and this work has a lot of them. This mother Cardinal has the most variation in thread colors of the three. Her position is more animated then the males.

I do seem to be in a bird phase at the moment.

Persuasion I was all ready to add the words on top of this work and then I realized that the value of the text was too close to the background. So I took them off and made some darker words( navy blue ) and brighter greens.

I am raw edge appliqueing them down with silver and pale blue metallic threads. There are two threads in one needle of the sewing machine.

Perception I could not bring myself to toss the pale purple words so I made a new background for them. The fuchsia and pink really high lights the words that were lost on the first work.. Then I added some of the leftover navy words too. I think that they add interest.

New Collection II Grandmother Mc This work is moving along. I am enjoying going through the old button collections and adding them to the surface.

Daily Practice This work just keeps building.

New I seem to be fascinated by the purple and apple green colors of late. This is a new combination for me and I guess I am not done exploring it.

Mulberry Memories- Carroll This work is moving slowly. I am adding the images I painted last week on the surface. As a child, I lived in this house five years and there are so many memories that I am having a hard time deciding what to use.

Card- Spin Spring seems bring on a dramatic change in the outside world and those changes push me in a new directions. I find that my mind is full of a wide variety of ideas.
